Mrs Buttree’s maths booster group have been learning about the definition of a circle, and the various ways to measure a circle including the radius, diameter and circumference.
We completed a practical activity in the playground. Children worked in groups to create their own chalk circles, each with a radius of 1 metre. We did this by marking a centre spot, then rotating a metre stick or length of string round and marking exactly 1 metre from the spot. Children were also able to discuss and use Pi and determine that the Circumference is Pi (π) x by the Diameter. We then came back into the classroom and had a go at using compasses for the first time to draw our own circles.
