School Sports Premium Funding
The government is still providing additional funding to improve the provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding, provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, will be allocated to primary school headteachers. The funding can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools.
In the academic year 2016-2017 the school received £18.690, the decisions for the expenditure were made by the previous leaders. The grant was spent on providing specialist teachers to teach PE and dance.
As judged by the Ofsted report published in May 2017:
‘The sports premium grant is used to good effect. Pupils enjoy the range of sporting activities and benefit from participation in sports’
However, as the overall Ofsted judgment was that the school required Special Measures, a radical evaluation of all previous spending decisions was taken by new leaders, to ensure that all available funding, including the PE/Sports premium, was appropriately targeted at strategies designed to improve pupil outcomes.
For the academic year 2017-2018 we have recieved £18,000, we have consequently made many changes as outlined below in order to raise achievement for all learners. We plan to raise the profile of sports across the school and aspirations of pupils through the following initiatives the impact of which will be fully evaluated and reported in Autumn 2018 ::
PE and sport is an entitlement of all pupils, integral to the curriculum offered to our children. All children receive a minimum of 2 hours timetabled PE each week with a range of after-school clubs and activities helping to develop this further. Staff receive specific, sports-related training and observe/work alongside specialist sports coaches to develop their expertise further. All children are able to access our PE curriculum and have their sporting achievements, both in and out of school, celebrated by the whole school community.
The School Sports Funding is being used to enhance and further develop our existing commitment to sport and PE. It is also used to further improve the quality of teaching and learning within PE and raise the number of pupils participating in sports-related activities. We have achieved this through employing a qualified PE teacher to work alongside teachers in lessons to develop staff expertise, deliver high-quality lessons and organise a range of local extra-curricular competitions. We also provide a sports club to increase pupil participation in structured sporting activities all these opportunities support the training and development of our pupils to have the skills and understanding of a range of sports to enable them to take part in competitions. The funding has also been used to provide year 4 children with transport to and from their required swimming lessons.
This year we have introduced the class challenge in KS2 – each lunchtime the children will participate in a different sports tournament, receiving points for fair play, teamwork, and resilience. This is a structured session where children from each class can take part. Each week we award a player of the week and let the children know which class has won. At the end of the year, the winning class will receive a trophy. We are hoping to develop this strategy on the KS1 playground.
The Daily Mile:
Another strategy we intend to implement is the daily mile, a strategy that is used in many schools to improve health and fitness within the children. Each day the children will go out with their class teacher and run for 15minutes this is roughly equivalent to a mile. The sports leaders programme:
The sports leader programme is available to all children who complete an application form, there are six units that the children will be assessed on;
- Personal skills
- Organisation skills
- Leadership Skills
In order to succeed as a sports leader, the children must pass each unit to a high standard. They will need commitment and determination to receive a bronze, silver, gold or platinum award at the end of the year. These awards will be presented at sports day.
This year we should also see an improvement in the quality of equipment the children have for their PE lessons this also includes developing physical education indoors and outdoors.
